U.S.Meat Animal Research Centre estimates that 80% to 90% of genetic improvement comes from bull selection. In three successive generations, the herd sires account for 87% of the genetic variation of calves currently in your herd.
Effective bull selection should focus on reproductive efficiency, maternal traits,
rapid genetic improvement in growth, feed efficiency, and carcass traits--in that
order. Put first things first in your bull selection process. Random selection of
bulls will result in random production results.
Research proves that EBVs are five to seven times more effective than performance records alone as a selection tool.
Sires used this season (2008) are Dalmally Rocky (P) and Glenfosslyn 787 (P) by natural service, and Minlacowie Bold Baron (P), Clonlara 9937 (P) and Billabong Neon (P) by Artificial Insemination.
